Ayurveda is a tradition that started in India that promotes healing through the elements. Ayurveda is a system that believes that bacteria and virus do not cause disease. The elements express themselves as three metabolic types, or doshas (which all health diagnoses and treatments are based upon). Each dosha stands for a different quality of combined elements.

  • Vata= ether and air
  • Pitta= fire and water, and
  • Kapha= water and earth.

Doshas give us information for making good decisions to lead a healthy lifestyle. Doshas also play a huge part in understanding. Ayurveda helps us to become aware of our own dosha. Becoming aware of your dosha can help you prevent disease, choose the diet that fits you best, and what lifestyles and actions will best support and balance us.

The following information will help you figure out which dosha fits you best.

  • Pitta: (fire and water create heat, clarity, transformation and making connections: Do you hold anger? Are you enthusiastic? Are you loud? Digestive problems/love to eat? Can't let go? Are you over protective? Overly goal oriented?)
  • Kapha: (Water and earth create fluidity, slow movements, completion and structure: Do you feel grounded? Do you handle finances well? Hard to lose weight? Sleep sound? Are you overprotective? A people pleaser?)
  • Vata: (Ether and air create space and movement: ls space an issue with you? Are you scattered? Do you talk rapidly? Do you wake up frequently? Do you feel impatient? Are you thin, wirey?

All of these doshas can be summed up in about one or two words:

  • Pittas: moderation
  • Kaphas: stimulation and motivation
  • Vatas: grounding and stability.
